‘Unsane,’ Soderbergh’s movie shot with an iPhone, slated for release March 2018
LOS ANGELES, Nov 15 — Unsane, Soderbergh’s movie shot with an iPhone, slated for release March 2018
Moviegoers in the US can catch Steven Soderbergh’s next feature film from March 23, 2018. The news comes from Bleecker Street, which is distributing the film with the help of the director’s company, Fingerprint Releasing. The movie is unusual in that it is filmed entirely with an iPhone.
Filmed in secret at the beginning of the year, Unsane is the fruit of the latest technical challenge that Steven Soderbergh set himself. This experimental low-budget picture stars Claire Foy (The Crown), Juno Temple—who’s also in Woody Allen’s upcoming Wonder Wheel—and Jay Pharoah (White Famous).
The storyline apparently focuses on a young woman who is interned in a psychiatric hospital against her will, where she finds herself facing her greatest fear. But is it real or just in her imagination?
Since coming out of his supposed retirement, Steven Soderbergh has been working on all kinds of atypical projects, both for the big screen and for TV. For HBO, the director has developed an interactive series available on smartphone, via a dedicated free-to-download application (only available in the USA), and via the TV network. It’s due to premiere January 22 on the American cable channel.
Steven Soderbergh isn’t the first filmmaker to use an iPhone for a camera. Sean Baker did the same in 2015 with Tangerine, which screened at the Sundance Film Festival. Also filmed on iPhone are Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi’s documentary This is Not a Film and French director Michel Gondry’s short film called Détour. — AFP-Relaxnews
