MTV today announced that Sir Rod Stewart, one of best-selling artists of all-time and a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, will perform with multi-platinum selling group DNCE for the re-imagined version of one of the most iconic dance tracks of all time, Stewart’s “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” at the 2017 “VMAs”. Grammy nominated singer-songwriter, Demi Lovato, with one of the most powerful voices both on and off the stage will perform “Sorry Not Sorry”.

The song, from her highly anticipated sixth studio album, has quickly proven to be one of the year’s biggest hits. Both performances will originate from Las Vegas in a special remote performance feature presented by PEPSI®. The 2017 “VMAs” will air live from the “Fabulous” Forum in Inglewood, Calif. on Sunday, August 27 AT 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.

The re-imagined version of Stewart’s iconic “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” featuring DNCE will be released on Friday, August 25. Originally released in 1978 on his classic ninth album Blondes Have More Fun, the song stands out as one of his signature hits, peaking at #1 in six countries including the US where it reigned at the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 chart four weeks in February 1979 and was named among Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time”.

In addition to the remote performances, PEPSI® will bring fans even more access to the artists and music of the VMAs with a newly added livestream of the red carpet spectacle on Twitter (mtv.twitter.com), as well as on MTV.com (vma.mtv.com), beginning the hour leading up to the on-air pre-show (3:00 p.m. PT/6:00 p.m. ET) straight through to the main event. The competition covers key markets in the Asia Pacific via three contest clusters consisting of Greater China (China, Hong Kong and Taiwan), Southeast Asia and Australia (Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand), and South Korea.

Bands, artists and songwriters are invited to submit their original compositions[1] – either through YouTube, Youku, or SoundCloud[2] links to the website at projectaloftstar.mtvasia.com, between5 July to 21 August 2017.

Public voting for People’s Choice Finalist

Four finalists will be shortlisted for each cluster – three will be selected by judges from MTV, and the fourth will be a People’s Choice finalist. From 25 August to 11 September, the public can vote for their favorite artist from curated entries on projectaloftstar.mtvasia.com. One voter per cluster will also stand a chance to win US$1,000.

Live finals at the newest Aloft Hotels in Asia

The four shortlisted finalists[3] in each cluster will perform at the finals in front of a live audience, and a panel of judges from Aloft, MTV and the music entertainment industry. Aloft and MTV are partnering up with Believe Distribution Services – a leading independent distributor and services provider for artists and labels worldwide – to offer a career-changing prize. Each winning artist will receive a mentorship from MTV and Believe Distribution Services, a Believe Distribution Services deal for marketing and distribution, and US$10,000 to kickstart their music career.

Finals will be held from October to November 2017 at Asia’s newest Aloft hotels: Aloft Perth for the Australia and Southeast Asia finals, Aloft Seoul Myeongdong for the South Korea finals, and Aloft Taipei Zhongshan for the Greater China finals.

Southeast Asia cluster winner in 2016, Soph Retief, produced and released her first music video “Guys Like You”, the song that clinched her win and will be performing at the Tunbridge Wells festival in July 2017. Winner of the Greater China cluster in 2016, Wang Dazhi (a.k.a. MTV Asia today announced new series “Clickbait”. This series takes viewers down an internet rabbit hole of music-inspired video content, showcasing the best of the web’s musical moments that MTV hand-picked from the internet and will have fans #ROFL.

Clickbait premieres on MTV Asia on 2 July, Sunday at 9.30pm (SG/PH), 10.30pm (MY) and 8.30pm (WIB), and repeats on 4 July, Tuesday at 8.00pm (SG/PH), 9.00pm (MY) and 7.00pm (WIB). Using the show as a platform to showcase Asia’s very own sounds of the internet, MTV Asia also is collaborating with Musical.ly to showcase viral musicals on the app that focus on three categories — “Talent”, “Comedy” and “Animals”. Clickbait x Musical.ly montage videos for each category will be produced, showing off the most popular and viral music clips in Musical.ly created by Asian musers[1]. The montages will then be used for both MTV Asia’s on-air and on social platforms starting 5 July.

Narrated by American comedian Akaash Singh, each 30-minute episode is shot from the perspective of his mobile device. Singh will navigate fans between viral videos and hilarious clip montages as he jokes and swipes through the coolest, weirdest and funniest music-themed user generated content out there.

The 20 x 30 minute episodes are produced for MTV International by Meetinghouse Productions. Executive producers are Jason Cilo of Meetinghouse Productions and Bruce Gillmer, Jennifer Demme-Harris and Adriana Cornejo for MTV International.

MTV Energizes Fans With Musical.Ly Collaborations

MTV, the world’s biggest youth entertainment brand, is constantly looking for new ways to engage and energize its fanbase. As more fans are found on the digital space, the brand continues its collaboration with Musical.ly to engage fans in fresh and exciting ways.

The brand previously collaborated with Musical.ly for its popular programme, OK DanceOke, gaining over 10,000 entries and gaining 30,000 followers on its MTV Asia channel on Musical.ly. The brand also EMA2016’s Best Southeast Asia act challenge, gaining more than 140,000 followers in the process.

After the success of the collaboration, MTV then collaborated with the platform again for MTV’s European Music Awards 2016 Best Southeast Asia act challenge, getting fans to state who should win the award. Driven with the support of nominated artists, MTV garnered more than 10,000 entries and gained more than 110,000 followers on the app.

By innovating on traditional methods to create content and source for talents, these collaborations with Musical.ly have helped build one of the most successful direct fan engagement programmes on the platform. A fresh collaboration on MTV OK DanceOke

Imagine being featured on Bruno Mars’ That’s What I Like music video! To promote the new season of its popular programme, MTV OK DanceOke, MTV will be hosting a series of challenges on Musical.ly that ultimately gives fans the opportunity to be featured on actual episodes of MTV OK DanceOke. To join, fans had to follow a specific dance move from artist music videos selected by MTV Asia. MTV Asia would then select the top 50 videos in terms of popularity and the accuracy of the dance move, finally interweaving dance moves from fans and the actual videos. On the latest season of MTV Ridiculousness
As promotion for the latest season of the MTV show Ridiculousness, MTV partners up with Musical.ly to host a series of fun challenges to promote the stunt. These Musical.ly challenges are aimed at getting fans to do humorous musicals. The best clips will be selected and formed into a vignette that airs as filler throughout the channel in conjunction with MTV Lol Lol Land, the brand’s April programming.
